CAPABILITY - NEW BUILD

Custom Boat

Building

COMMISSIONED VESSELS, DRAWN AND BUILT FOR TH E WATER THEY WILL WORK IN

A boat built once, properly, to a shape and a specification you have had a hand in settling — and a shed that will still be here to look after it.

The breadth of the trade

A new build is a long conversation before it is a pile of timber. We would rather spend weeks on the model, the drawings and the loft floor than discover a compromise once the planking is on.

The workshop builds in traditional plank-on-frame, cold-moulded veneer, strip-plank and composite, and chooses between them on the merits of the brief rather than habit. Displacement, maintenance, budget and how the owner intends to use the boat all argue for a different answer.

Everything from the backbone to the joinery, the paint and the sea trials is carried by the same team, with mechanical, rigging and electrical trades coordinated by us. One shed, one specification, one point of accountability.

Custom Boatbuilding

Commissioned vessels, drawn and built for the water they will actually work in.

Wooden Boat Restoration

Classic and significant timber vessels returned to sound working order.

Repairs & Refits

From storm damage to a full reconfiguration of the interior.

Finishing & Spray Painting

Preparation is the majority of the work and the reason a finish lasts.

Allied Trade Coordination

One point of accountability from survey to handover.

New builds developed with owners and designers from first sketch and lofting through construction, fitout and launch. Traditional carvel and clinker, cold-moulded and strip-plank construction, with composite work where the brief calls for it. MAIWAR, the ocean rowing boat designed and built in this shed, is the clearest statement of what the team can carry through end to end.

Structural restoration led by survey rather than appearance: fastenings, floors, frames, garboards and the ends where water collects. We retain as much original fabric as the boat will allow and replace only what must be replaced, then keep a written and photographic record that stays with the vessel.

Structural repairs, replanking, frame and floor renewal, deck and coaming work, rudder and steering repairs, joinery and interior reconfiguration. Refits are staged so the boat is never opened up further than the season allows, and the original design intent is respected throughout.

Fairing, priming, brightwork, hand-laid varnish and two-pack spray application in a dedicated finishing area. Antifoul, boot-topping and topside refinishing carried out to a standard that survives Queensland sun and a working season on the bay.

Mechanical, engineering, rigging, sailmaking, electrical, electronics and trimming arranged and supervised by us through long-standing relationships with trades we trust. The owner deals with the workshop, not with six separate contractors and their calendars.

Machinery & Fabrication

Undercover bays taking vessels to sixty feet, with the height and access to strip a hull, renew frames and replank without the boat ever standing in weather. A vessel stays in the one bay for the duration of its programme rather than being shuffled between spaces.

A dedicated finishing area kept physically separate from dust-generating work, with extraction and controlled lighting for fairing, priming, two-pack spray application and hand-laid varnish. Preparation happens here, not in a corner of the shed.

Thicknesser, bandsaw, planer and steam box for frame and plank work, with bench metalwork for floors, fastenings and fittings. Traditional hand tools stay in daily use where the machine cannot follow the shape of a hull.

Slipping and on-site work carried out where boats are berthed, for antifoul, running gear, survey work and anything better done without a road move. Vessels come into the shed only when the work warrants it.

Records & Owner Access

Bench space for interior joinery, cabinetry, hatches, spars and small craft built alongside larger programmes. Timber is selected, stored and worked on site so grain, moisture and finish are matched to the vessel rather than ordered in.

Every programme is photographed and documented as it runs — timbers, fastenings, dates and decisions — and owners are welcome in the shed to see their boat open. The record is handed over with the vessel.

Slipway & On-Water Access

Most of what people admire in a finish happened before any paint was mixed. Fairing, filling and priming are the long part; the topcoat is the short one, and it only looks right if the air it lands in is clean.

Keeping the finishing area separate from planing, sanding and grinding is the single most useful thing a workshop can do for the durability of its own work — and it is the reason a two-pack finish laid here survives a Queensland season on the bay.

Brightwork and varnish are laid by hand in the same space, built up in coats over days rather than forced in an afternoon.
